What inspired Thomas Jefferson to write these powerful words? Join Back to Basics Learning as we study the philosophies of the Enlightenment period. How do powerful ideas shape great stories—and even change history? In this engaging high school literature course, students will explore key Enlightenment philosophies and see how they come to life in some of the most impactful works of literature. Students will be introduced to the ideas of influential thinkers such as John Locke, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Montesquieu, examining concepts like natural rights, freedom, justice, and the role of government. These philosophical ideas will then be connected to major historical documents, including the Declaration of the Rights of Man, the Declaration of Independence, and Common Sense; as well as well known literature such as The Crucible, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, The Hiding Place, and more. Through reading, discussion, and analysis, students will explore how literature reflects and challenges the ideas of its time. They will consider questions about morality, authority, individual rights, and resistance—making meaningful connections between historical philosophy and human experience. Perfect for students who enjoy deep thinking, meaningful conversations, and discovering how ideas shape both stories and society.
